Following the launch of the sixth and final Scorpene Submarine, “Vagsheer,” for the Indian Navy earlier this year, Mazagaon Dock Shipbuilders Limited has begun the process of absorbing much of the technology that came with the transfer of these submarines from France so that it can be used for the country’s ongoing next-generation conventional submarine programme.
The primary technology that was transferred will be modernised or upgraded locally allowing for future local modifications on Scorpene class submarines as well as the usage of the same technology for conventional submarine programmes. Since Mazagaon and the Indian Navy collaborate closely, it is crucial that it be updated and modernised. India has also paid for the transfer of technology from France.
To lessen reliance on its manufacturers for the integration of indigenous weaponry and other improvements, Mazagaon Dockyards Limited also intends to work on in-house software programmes for the weapons systems and other communication systems for present and future submarine developments.
