Astra Beyond Visual Range Missile Integration into Indian Navy’s Mig-29K fleet

By the end of this year, Mig-29K fighter aircraft will be equipped with Beyond Visual Range (BVR) Air to Air Missile Astra MKI developed by DRDO based on personnel needs issued by the IAF catering for BVR. HAL is in charge of the programme, and integration work has already started. Before actual trials start, CAD-based simulation is utilised to validate carriage and separation simulations.

Following the Sukhoi-30MKI, the LCA Tejas Mk1 has finished carriage and separation tests, and the missile will be tested from the aircraft shortly after the Transfer of Technology from DRDO to Bharat Dynamics Limited for bulk production of the Astra MKI missile along with all associated systems has been completed. This will result in integration with other fighter aircraft, including the Mig-29UPG in a phased manner.

Astra MKI missile is technologically and economically superior to many such imported missile systems and will be replacing Russian supplied R-77 BVR missile across Russian fighter fleet and also be integrated on Tejas Mk1A and Mk2 fleet.
